The Lies We Believe

September is National Suicide Prevention Month.

I didn’t know that until recently. I wish I still didn’t know.

Our son Coulter left us reasons. But the reasons he left were based on things he had come to believe about himself that simply weren't true.

He believed he was a failure in school. In reality, he graduated high school with an A/B average, passed his AP tests, and had begun college.

He believed he was fat and unattractive. In reality, he was 5’11”, 155lbs and many saw him as very handsome.

He believed he had no impact and was not well respected. In reality, people shared that he changed and even saved their lives, and hundreds gathered to mourn his loss.

He believed that we would all be better off without him. In reality, none of us are; he could not have been more wrong.

Sometimes, things do not have to be true to feel true.

If you can identify with this; if you have heard a voice that tells you in those quiet moments alone that you are a failure, that you are not enough, that the world would be better off without you, please consider this:

What if that voice is lying to you?

If you are struggling to tell the difference between what is true and what your pain is telling you, let someone else speak into your life.

Let someone know what you have begun to believe about yourself.

Give those that love you the opportunity to share with you what they see in you, to remind you of what you cannot see right now, and to walk with you until you can see it again.

And please remember that your value will never be determined by your GPA, your net worth, or your physical prowess or attractiveness.

Your loving Creator has already spoken to your value. You were made in His image. And through Christ, we are invited to be adopted as the beloved sons and daughters of the One True King.
