See the Unseen

Jesus stopped . . . Mark 10:49

“When I first moved to Boerne, I felt horribly alone. Coulter was the first to make me smile, to make me feel welcomed and significant.”

During Coulter’s memorial, we asked people to share any words that they didn’t get to share with him or things they wanted to share with us. The messages above are just a few of the pages of comments we received.

We saw glimpses of his caring for and protecting others in him standing up for friends, befriending the person being bullied, and including others being left out. But these messages helped us see a side of him that we had not fully seen.

Coulter seemed to see the unseen or those who were overlooked, hurting, or lonely, and he knew how to reach out to them. He could make them laugh and had the ability to make them feel seen and known and valued.

And yet, he would not share the burden he was carrying or let others help him.

Sometimes those who show up for everyone else feel like they can't burden others with the weight they are carrying.

I love that he was loving, compassionate, and protective; that he helped carry his friends. I wish he understood how valuable he was, how important he was to so many, and how many people would have shown up for him, if only given the chance.

Jesus set the example of seeing the unseen that Coulter reflected. He stopped and had mercy on the blind beggar everyone told to be quiet. He touched the untouchable to heal and comfort them and spoke the word “daughter” to heal the heart and the body of the suffering woman, who just wanted to go unnoticed.

Let’s look for the unseen.

The quiet one.

The lonely one.

The one standing outside the circle.

Or maybe one who seems to be carrying everyone else.

Stop. See them. Let them know they are valued.

And if that person is you, please let someone see you too.

And know that your Father already does. He knows you. And He loves you.

You Are Loved More Than You Know.
