Sept is Suicide Prevention Month
I try to honor the Light that Coulter showed in life by offering insight into him and how he reflected the Love, Light, and Hope of his Heavenly Father.
For this topic, I wasn’t able to do that.
We see many messages of encouragement to check on people we see struggling. But the terrifying fact is that many people struggling don’t show it to others.
The CDC reports that suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death in ages 10-24, but only about half of those who die by suicide have a previously diagnosed mental health condition.
Coulter was a statistical anomaly.
Considering observable risk factors, statistically he was extraordinarily unlikely to die by suicide.
He came from a loving, intact, economically stable family of faith. We had an amazing relationship, one that other parents told us they envied. He had friends and healthy, meaningful relationships. It was medically verified that there was no substance abuse. He was in good health with interests and hobbies. He was engaged in school and had opportunities and plans for the future. He was making plans to complete homework and for camping trips and holidays in the coming weeks. When I asked him how he was doing that day, he said, “I’m fine,” and he was just a little down because his closest friends were all heading back to their different colleges.
And yet the unthinkable happened.
In one moment, our lives went from virtually perfect to a hellish nightmare that we can’t wake from.
We share this because for those left behind, well-intentioned and very true reminders to check on people can sometimes feel like an accusation.
They are not. Sometimes, we just can’t see the internal turmoil of those we love most unless they choose to let us see it, to let us in.
If you are hurting, please know that for those who love you, sharing your pain and allowing them to help you carry your burden is infinitely less painful than carrying it without you.
