The Light Beneath the Waves

August 6th is International SCUBA Day and is intended to bring people together in celebration and education about the underwater world.
Coulter loved SCUBA diving. But it was not the act or the feeling of diving that he loved. Diving was a means to an end. What he truly loved was exploring the wonder and beauty of God’s creation, and especially His world beneath the waves.
Diving can feel unnatural and even foreboding. One of the most challenging aspects of diving can be the darkness and limited visibility. Visibility becomes more difficult, and colors disappear the deeper you dive. In those limited visibility conditions, where light is filtered out and everything becomes a shade of blue or grey, much of the beauty of the sea is hidden. Even seasoned divers can become disoriented, panicked, or lost.
But when the light from above is bright, or the rays of your dive light penetrate the darkness, the color returns and you can truly begin to appreciate the beauty that was hidden. Of course, the fish and coral did not change. It was simply the power of the light reflected off them that revealed the beauty that was there all along.
Just as the underwater world demonstrates its beauty when it reflects the light from above, all that was beautiful in Coulter; his love, his friendship, his compassion, his humor, his thoughtfulness, his generosity, his strength, and so much more, was a reflection of the Light of His Heavenly Father.
And just as the underwater world can seem dark and foreboding if light is not penetrating its depths, as we move through this broken world and we are struggling to see our Father’s Light, our lives can feel much the same way. Despair, grief, or an inability to see His plan for our lives can make the world seem colorless and hopeless.
But when our Father’s Light reaches into those dark places, we can see that He was always there. His beauty and hope and purpose were never absent; they were just momentarily concealed by darkness.
Look toward His Light that reveals His Beauty and do not become overwhelmed by the darkness.
